Norfolk & Western Class 'A' Prototype Photo

Road number 1239 was one of five locomotives built in the fourth and final production group. These locomotives were unique for a number of reasons including the fact that they were built new with all of the modernized improvements. In addition to the 'Alligator' crossheads, Timken roller-bearing rods, and class 'I' tender, 1239 was also equipped with a Westinghouse aftercooler mounted on the front pilot late in her career, approximately 1958. The next photo will show an engineer's side view of the same locomotive (1958)
